Managed about 7 hours sleep which is quite good by my standards at the moment! Still feeling a bit snuffly but think I’ll get through today’s meeting all right. Then this evening it’s the annual fancy dinner where we have to make small talk with trustees’ husbands – the chairman loves that whole boy-girl seating arrangement which I find so old-fashioned. I usually dread this occasion but end up getting drunk having quite a good time after all. At least we have selected some good wine to drink 🙂 Will be glad when it’s all over and I can come home and collapse though.

  1. Oh gosh, it’s hard enough to make small talk with a stranger of the same gender, let alone the other one. In the US, most men fall back on sports as their reliable small talk topic, and many women can not really converse on that topic. Is it the same in Britain?

    • I think when it’s men talking to men, they talk about sport a lot. Fortunately the husbands of our trustees are fairly urbane types so there are usually a few subjects we can find in common – where people live, holidays, wine, maybe even politics which is so interesting at the moment. Anyway, I skived the dinner in the end as I was feeling terrible, so no small talk was required! Definitely the right decision! 🙂

      • I’m glad you got out of the dinner but sorry it was because you were feeling ill. I hope you are feeling better now.
