I enjoyed a  very pleasant day at work, just puttering away with a detailed computer task, listening to music and feeling relaxed.  No meetings, no boss, and very few interruptions.

Towards the end of the day I got word of a scandal brewing with the high leadership.  The school of medicine’s VP has recently been firing department chairs, and apparently on Monday she fired the CEO of the cancer institute, who has 11 years of service in the position, by email.  The CEO is very accomplished, internationally recognized, and beloved by the cancer institute faculty and staff.  The cancer institute is funded and named after the wealthiest family in the state, who also own the newspaper.  The is the family of Jon Huntsman, the ambassador to China under Obama and our former state governor.  Anyway, the newspaper ran a front-page story that was very unfavorable towards the VP, with quotes from Huntsman calling it a power grab and vowing that the CEO will get her job back one way or another.  Also, over 200 faculty and staff staged a protest during a meeting that was called on the fly and meant to quell the unrest.  It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.  I have never liked the VP or the direction that she’s taking the university and so would not be sad if she ends up losing her job.  If only national and international politics could be solved so easily, by having a good guy with power step in and make things right!

I do have a couple of meetings today, a short one at noon and a longer one at the end of the day, but I can devote the morning to accomplishments, so that’s what I’ll do.

  1. Ooh, that sounds like my perfect working day! And such interesting times with the office politics!

  2. The VP sounds very trigger-happy! Hope she gets a taste of her own medicine soon.
