Yawn!  Am I ever sleepy!  Last night’s tedious “celebration” has kept me from my sleep.  The event was about as anticipated, with the boss holding the floor for most of the event.  That would not have been so bad if he was saying something interesting, but instead he provided a blow-by-blow description of the grant submission process, which is not exactly scintillating material.  It was a dinner meeting, and the food choices were downright bizarre.  Trying to think of what the assistant was thinking when she came up with the menu, I can only surmise that she selected the cheapest options.  I did get to meet a couple of nice people, although there wasn’t much opportunity for us to have actual conversations.

On a much happier note, we received a big check from our benefactor yesterday.  This is a tremendous relief to me and will keep our operations going for another year.  So I am happy about that.

I’m hoping for a quiet day at work so that I can just work on things without interruption.  We’ll see how that goes.

SL’s FTF, Wed 30th Nov

So much for things quietening down – yesterday chief unexpectedly dumped a load of stuff on me which is proving rather thorny and one particular colleague, who moves in a mysterious way, is sending mysterious emails and not giving us the full story. Argh!

The good news was that our second candidate for the part-time credit control position turned out to have her head screwed on and will be starting with us in January, hurrah!

This morning I have a meeting with some people who seem to want us to take over their charity, but have been making demands and asking weird questions, so will see which way this goes. I think they probably need us more than we need them (not at all), but it sounds like they see it the other way round. Hmmm.

  • food shopping since I failed to get lunch yesterday

T’s 30th Nov.

Infernal day awaits me. But at least I started it well, by getting up unseemly early this morning and working on my draft for the talk of next week for one hour. I completed the whole outline, so I am very happy. Ok, now to the infernal part.

  • 9:30 teaching 1 (invent something or prepare something to say, haven’t really thought about this, eh!)
  • 10:20 from lecture straight to Graduation committee, till 12:20
  • (lunch break? or rather, prepare for teaching 2, aehm!) ops, this is when I also have to have the “difficult talk” with the colleague who tried to get me involved in something I’m not at all willing to do, my aim is to try to extricate myself nicely and gently (and failing that, extricate myself no matter how, I don’t have to lose sight of what is my aim, and don’t want to end up being pushed into agreeing with something only because I start with the notion that I want to be nice and don’t want to  upset him. So I’ll keep smiling, keep my voice down, my eyes tamed, I will do my best not to show in any way how much I despise him, but I’ll just keep repeating that, no, I just won’t do it. Uhm, this is going to be tricky. Thinking Bartleby for inspiration)!
  • gluten free shopping
  • 2:30 pm teaching 2
  • 3:15 – 5 pm: office hours (I cross muy fingers students won’t need me today, that way I would be able to:
    • order books for library,
    • email MLT (talk to FB first),
    • file my expenses,
    • digit draft,
    • prep. lessons for tomorrow)
  • back home, quick session of tidying up
  • 6:30: wait for the visit of the tinsmith (so even today I won’t b getting to the gym, it’s like 2 months since I last went, sigh! Ok, I can’t blame the tinsmith for this)
  • crumble on the sofa with a book? Or rather, cook something good? what makes me feel better at that point

calypte 29th November

Hello, I “aten’t dead”, as they say on Discworld 🙂 Just very busy – but in a good way. Yesterday was tai chi, which I’m getting back into after wondering a little if I’d continue – I’m going to experiment with spending the gap between that and work (~2 hours, including travelling) in a coffee shop reading/writing, rather than trying to get home and head out again – think this’ll make for a much more chillaxed experience 🙂 Last night I met sm from work and had some food and wander ’round the xmas market and ‘Street of Light’, and it was lovely.

Tonight is yoga – last of the three sessions, so I’m hoping it’s on again next year as I’ve been loving it! I’m skipping my last ‘hosting’ of a Nano write in for it, so tomorrow I’ll be helping out at the last day event after work. Not sure how that’ll go, as other ML is finished and I’m not even (really) trying – so neither of us will have the pressure or inclination to sit there late, esp. with work tomorrow! I’ve really enjoyed not killing myself over hitting 50K this year, and am facing December with a will to carry on the few-hundred-a-night rather than the usual burnt out feeling. Which makes next year a bit ‘hmm’, but that’s 11 months to think about! 🙂

Thursday I’ve got a ‘VIP’ event aka drinks and nibbles in a shop, but should be fun, and Friday is art class and the usual cinema group after a couple of weeks missed. Then Saturday I’ve got a tai chi workshop (more holistic view, not just the forms as per Mondays) before meeting my dad and getting my new (yay!) fireplace installed. And Sunday is the nano TGIO party/lunch – phew!! Can I have a holiday?! 😉

Talking of new things, managed to snag a bargain on a new laptop yesterday (from a different manufacturer!!), and today the process of getting my money back on the previous, broken one kicked up a gear – they are NOT making it easy, but almost there, fingers crossed! Also got a cheque for the roof, so just one payment left – soooo glad this is almost over!! Feels nice to finally have things moving in good directions!

Still no news on medical stuff, but meh – plenty to do otherwise, and I’ve stopped stressing so much about it. For now, at least!

Feels good to be busy with so many good things, and to be in a good mood in general, however it’ll be equally nice to *not* be as busy next week, and start to think about catching up on some of the non-social stuff, like xmas cards. Because yes, I am already late on that, but already starting to enjoy the festive period despite it still being November – sorry, guys 😉

11/29/16 ftf, wren

I made some progress with work things yesterday and hope to do more today.  This will be a long day that I’ve been dreading.  A couple months ago, after we were successful in obtaining a big research grant, the boss fixated on the notion that everyone involved in the project must get together for a celebratory champagne toast. As far as I can tell, it’s never crossed his mind that people might not want to stay several hours after work for the opportunity to toast him and listen to him pontificate.  Today is the day of the event, and it appears that very few people will be attending, but he’s made it clear that I”m expected to go.  At least the snow has stopped, so I won’t have to contend with that while driving home in the dark, and at least the idea of having a photographer on hand to capture the event has been nixed.

The situation with Trump and his cabinet choices, as well as the outbreak of racist attacks that have been occurring in his name, is so alarming and discouraging.  I seriously wonder if our country will survive.

T’29th Nov

Yesterday I had lots of fun with my mum: she used to be a tailor and after I’d asked her, she showed me how she “translates” a photo of a jacket from a magazine into a paper pattern, I found the whole process pretty impressive. And, yes, well, it was a great way to connect and excellent so-called “quality” time together, but my to-do list went out of the window for half a day. So, lots to do today, plus it’s commuting day. And readjusting to worktown flat and to what needs doing there.

  • prepare for tomorrow graduation committee
  • finish reading student’s thesis
  • chk what I’m going to wear A/O laundry!
  • make progress (even minimal) on 3 of my current writing projects
  • prepare lecture1 & lec. 2 for tomorrow
  • email N.
  • gym
  • ??? what else? I’m sure I’m missing something vital Rrrright! send happy birthday wishes to Sari!

SL’s FTF, Tues 29th Nov

Woken up early by a large crashing sound from next door – thanks, neighbours! I have plenty to do today as we’re hitting peak season ticket loan season, so thought I might as well get in early and then hopefully leave early too.

The wine tasting went well last night and to my surprise the Portuguese red was chosen, which is supplied by my friend Andrew, so that was nice! We also interviewed our first candidate for the new role and let’s just say I hope today’s interview goes better – yesterday’s candidate seemed lovely but was quite a fruitcake.

  • STLs
  • deal with Justgiving coding
  • interview 2
  • carry on with minutes
  • meeting with fundraiser guy
  • various home admin to deal with this evening – phone, Xmas presents etc
  • plot analysis – am reading a book about this which is quite helpful so far
