Most of the US will be coming back on line today after the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend.   Happily, the boss will be out of the office again today, although he’ll be working from home, so his presence could still be felt.  It was a cold and snowy weekend here.  Thank goodness I didn’t have to drive in it.

My poor mom ended up spending Thanksgiving day alone.  She usually goes to my brother’s home for the holiday celebration, and she usually waits for him to give her firm details.  This year, my brother and his wife are dealing with the wife’s parents’ big illnesses, and he didn’t tell my mom until the day before Thanksgiving that they wouldn’t be having any celebration.  It’s a shame my mom didn’t get more notice, as one of her closest friends was also spending the day alone,  and they could have made plans to share the meal together.  She and I talked about her being more proactive about getting definite details regarding holiday plans from my brother, so I’m hoping she will follow through in case he is also not celebrating Christmas.

J and I went to see the movie Brooklyn on Saturday and enjoyed it very much.  I understand that it was actually filmed in Toronto…

Feeling fairly blah today and not even a little bit in the holiday spirit.  That’s my cue to practice extreme self-careI’ll continue with last week’s approach of aiming to complete at least six things on my work to-do list.

calypte 30th November

Hit 50K of NaNoWriMo at about half eight last night (after spending all day sat in front of the computer, largely messing around!) so having a large sense of ‘now what?’ about today! Well, not really – had booked the day off to finish, and am determined that my plans of reading, hot baths, and tv binges all help me see off the tickle in my throat aka ‘The Curse of NaNo’ – I’ve been ill 1st/2nd December for at least the past two years – argh!!

I treated myself to a PaperChase order last night – sparkly stickers and card – which does imply xmas cards in the very near future! I’ve got today and most of next weekend to get cracking, me thinks, as after that is xmas party season.

And then there’s all my other November-abandoned habits! Thinking, today ‘off’, and then get cracking again tomorrow (1st December, oh my!) – it’s like have another new year start a month early! 🙂

SL’s FTF, Mon 30th Nov

Had a nice time in Sweden – my friends have moved to Lund now and it was nice to see their new flat, which is in an old building, and to meet the cat, which turned out to be quite a psycho! We went to Tivoli on Saturday which was delightful especially when it stopped raining… lovely Xmas decorations and lashings of glogg 🙂

Back to work today and hopefully not too many horrors waiting in the inbox.

  • ironing
  • breakfast
  • STLs
  • emails
  • review the list…
  • catch up with C
  • look up IBAN
  • hopefully crack on with ancient minutes from September
  • food shopping
  • catch up on the Bridge!
  • catch up on Homeland!

SL’s FTF, Thurs 26th Nov

Last night’s AGM was another uncomfortable experience, especially when I realised that the woman chairing it lives next door to me! She was actually a much better chair than the woman who did it last year who was very abrasive, but even so, there were times when people weren’t given an opportunity to speak, and I still feel some of the board are quite arrogant and have a we-know-best attitude. One of them was asked some questions about finances and appeared not to have a clue about who authorises payments or what levels of authority they have, which was quite disturbing.

Up bright and early for club committee this morning (hopefully rather better-tempered and competent than what happened last night) and then Z and I are going to a conference about risk, which looks quite interesting – how to stop fraud etc. Not that I think we have any major risks but we need a disaster recovery plan and don’t have one at the moment.

After that, we’re whizzing back to the office to collect C and S and taking them out for cocktails, as S is leaving tomorrow. Should be nice. I’m going to miss our Lana Del Rey lookalike with her dry sense of humour!

  • breakfast
  • Headspace
  • committee
  • quick check of other stuff, STLs, emails
  • head over to Old Street, meet Z
  • risk conference
  • cocktails
  • poss Byron after? 🙂
  • need to get presents – Hamleys or John Lewis, thank god for late-night opening on a Thurs

Just like SL, today is my last day of work for the week.  Unless something big happens early this morning, I’ll be letting everyone go home at noon today, as tomorrow is the Thanksgiving holiday, and many will be traveling or involved with preparations at home.  I’m hoping to leave at 11:00 a.m., because I come in earlier than everyone else and also because I want to get home before the predicted snow storm hits.  On the busiest travel day of the year in the US, a winter storm is expected to roll in at noon.  I used to really love Thanksgiving but have felt either sad or just indifferent for the past five years, ever since Sadie died on the day after.

J has two days off from work, which is practically unheard of, today and tomorrow, so he will be home when I get home.  Also, we’re supposed to have a new washing machine delivered today.  Those things should be fun.

As far as work goes, once again my aim is to complete at least six tasks on the list.

SL’s FTF, Wed 25th Nov

Today is my last day in the office this week, since tomorrow Z and I have a conference and on Friday I’m off to Sweden for the weekend 🙂

This evening it’s the AGM for my block of flats. I never used to go to this, but there’s a lot of animosity at the moment and I’m quite supportive of the rabble-rousers as it seems the Board has been resting on its laurels, question marks over the insurance, and they seem to be far too cosy with the managing agents who may be getting paid for work they don’t actually do.

The voting procedure for candidates last year was quite bizarre with both For and Against columns, and there was no time to explain anything so nobody really knew what was going on. When did elections ever have an Against column? I’d never seen anything like it. Tonight will be interesting…

  • breakfast
  • Headspace
  • STLs
  • talk to investment guru woman
  • draft response to TG
  • talk to Z about catering/food for party
  • chase server people
  • prep for committee tomorrow
  • if time, some fundholder admin
  • quick dinner
  • AGM
