Moosie Thursday 23 October

Last night was actually OK – my old successor/contemporary (H) is going back to JP in December and the new guy (N) is also someone I had emailed but never met which is a bit like history repeating itself. I had forgotten what a genuinely good guy H is and while N seemed to be struggling to adjust to life here, I think we were able to cheer him up a bit. I managed to persuade three grown men that they needed a trip to the Haagen Dazs café and then had the pleasure of seeing their faces light up when the white chocolate fondue arrived!!

The Twatboss Chronicles continued yesterday with my boss suddenly out if nowhere announcing that if I want my exam fees paid, I need to sign a declaration that I will repay the entire course amount if I leave the company for any reason within twelve months of my final qualification (which could be two years from now) – even though they’ve already paid for the study materials. We’re talking about a total cost of less than a grand a year with no study leave and no-one in our dept has had to sign one before (and don’t get me started on the ridiculousness of announcing this halfway through). So I told him where he could stick it and will do the exams myself next summer when I can get the cheap advance rate – happily this means no exams after all this winter so I can focus on happier things instead. I’m definitely not doing anything to tie myself in to this job any longer than absolutely necessary.

Our town is looking so Halloweenish, with lots of pumpkins on doorsteps and yards full of ghosts, witches and more.  Our own yard is decorated nicely.  Do people decorate their houses for Halloween in Britain or Canada?  Enquiring minds want to know…

While hiking with our dogs yesterday evening, a big red and white border collie joined us on the trail.  He was all alone, and he followed us relentlessly.  He was a beautiful boy, very sweet, but he was obviously not trained at all, and he needed a bath and a good brushing.  Becca and Elbee were not happy about having him around, because he was so overwhelming and energetic.  When we finished the hike, I phoned the local pound, and someone had reported the dog missing, thank goodness.  The pound called the dog’s person, and they were reunited shortly after.  Anyway, the point is that it really made me appreciate how easy it is to be with Becca and Elbee because I have made the effort to teach them good manners.  I usually don’t give myself any credit for that and just think that all border collies are naturally great dogs.

I’m hoping that today won’t be too crazy at work so I can continue getting more things done.  My to-do list feels out of control again.  I’m leaving work a couple hours early to attend a work-sponsored class on Retirement Planning for Women.  I usually feel so terrified and hopeless when the subject of retirement comes up, and I’m hoping this class will be helpful and reassuring, rather than making me feel more terrified and hopeless.

Moosie Thursday 22 October

Lots going on at the moment. Had a big discussion about career/work options at therapy last night and now my head is spinning with ideas; I’ve got new song ideas going out all over the place and emails about song options for a group gig that’s going on in a couple of weeks – it’s all going on!

Tonight I have dinner with the guy from my old company who I met once, his successor who I think I know but have never met, and one guy from my company who I know but can’t stand! Thankfully my boss is not involved. It will be good Japanese and social etiquette practice, it would help if there’s decent food as well…

* swim
* breakfast

Work:

I’m trying to savor the special little things that occur.  Yesterday, the most specialness happened early, during Happy Dog Time.  There is a nice little park just outside our back fence, so I just open the back gate and let the girls run around in the park.  Yesterday, there was a deer outside the fence.  It was nice to see it bounding away and also nice that Becca and Elbee didn’t chase after it.  After that, I also saw a comet.  That makes three shooting starts that I’ve seen in the past week.  I learned last night that there is a meteor show happening last night/this morning, so maybe I will see another one today.

Work went okay yesterday, despite two meetings and a bossful day.  I’m hoping for more of the same today.

SL’s FTF, Tuesday 21st October

So happy to get my follow-up trip to the doctors out of the way – saw a very nice doctor and it all went better than expected. I know there’s room for improvement but she didn’t lecture me too much! So much better than the old place. I now feel up to date on health stuff and can enjoy my trip to Burgundy with a clean conscience.

Tedious meeting today but otherwise all is calm and am heading serenely towards the weekend 😀

  • coffee
  • French
  • continue with VAT return
  • tedious meeting
  • leave a bit early, since tedious meeting eats into my lunchbreak
  • prep pepper/fennel thing
