SL’s FTF, Thurs 28th Nov

My radiator is working again! It was so nice to come home and find it all fixed and warm. I’m very pleased about it, as I’d feared that I’d have to wait till the heating system was turned off for the summer before it could be sorted out, and it’s getting cold at night (although admittedly not as cold as where you are, Wren and Dahlia)! Also, I have important guests visiting soon for Gougeres Night…

The employment law update that Z and I went to last night was very interesting. I was particularly interested in the stuff about slagging off your employer on FB or Twitter, and covert recording of conversations. Basically, if you don’t want your employees to do these things, you need a social media policy and something in your policies which says covert recording isn’t acceptable! I came home and told G about it, and he told me a story about how at his previous workplace a relatively new Jewish colleague had asked for Fridays off and had been on the receiving end of an anti-Semitic rant from one of the nasty partners, which he recorded and took to HR. Not good! Of course, I never say anything to anyone that I’d mind them recording, but it could still be quite uncomfortable. Time to update our staff handbook.

Mostly at the moment I’m excited because I gather there’s a new Dido greatest hits album out. Know what to get the Moose for Xmas now! 😉

  • enjoy being warm 😀
  • coffee
  • prep delicious lunch
  • pay plumber
  • crack on with property stuff today
  • make a start on revising income and expenditure guidelines for fundholders
  • leave at 6.00
  • clear up carnage
  • the next instalment of the Good Wife has arrived, so am planning a lovely 3 hour binge watch ce soir 🙂

Moosie Thursday 28 November

Thursday! Yesterday I believe we might have finished the budget, which is a nice surprise and means I can focus on revision at least for the bulk of today. Did get a bit of sleep although again complete lack of discipline when it comes to eating and sleeping in B’s absence!

Ftf:
* lie in to 5.30, potter about a bit – was nice to do this without disturbing b
* journal on the train
* swim

Work:
* revision: do hardest cards + a bunch of new ones
* practice questions – I have two massive topics to get through and would like to do as much today as possible. Try to remember that I have done all of this before and that every extra little thing I can learn could be a point in the exam! My main problem is that I get bored – but busy keep in mind there are only 5 days left to work on this and try to live in the moment!
* project x stuff – now the budget’s done this is my main.work task
* is N coming for lunch? This is someone I know remotely through work but have never actually met, never quite sure whether these things will actually happen!

Tonight was supposed to be K’s dinner but we’ve had some flakiness so it’s now 4 of us for coffee and I may try and get out of dinner as I’d rather go home and see B!!

Well, today marks my 27th year of sobriety.  It also marks 4 years since Sadie died.  I haven’t paid much attention to this day since Sadie died, because now it has such sadness attached to it.  Maybe this year will be different.

It’s the last day of work before the Thanksgiving holiday.  I would love to duck out a little early.  We’ll see.  Our secretary was going to encourage the boss to work from home today.  I hope she was successful!  He drove me a little crazy yesterday.  After I’d spend most of Monday working out the super-complex grant budget, he came in with an idea that meant I had to rework it again, several times.  After I’d spent the entire morning doing this, we got on the phone to get the approval of our collaborator…only to find out that my boss’s premise was completely wrong and that the budget I’d done in the first place was fine.  Argh!

Paws crossed for a quiet day.  And I should take a moment or two to think about the day’s anniversaries.

SL’s FTF, Wed 27th Nov

No noisy neighbours last night, so that was good. But the radiator didn’t get fixed either – the plumber is still waiting for the part to arrive, apparently. He’s supposed to be coming today. Paws crossed!

Book group was fun, and I was able to get Mr Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore chosen as the next book – not sure what they’ll make of it! I did want it to be something light and cheerful after a series of sad/miserable/depressing/brutal books. What is it about books these days, tchah.

Also, I finished reading Snow White Must Die. I suppose I’m glad I read it, to see what the fuss is about, but wouldn’t recommend it. I found it quite slow, implausible and rambling and then at the end there were further revelations with new characters suddenly cropping up in what felt like a deus ex machina way. Someone else on Amazon said the problem was there weren’t any nice characters in it, and to a large extent that was true.

On to today…

  • coffee
  • prep delicious lunch (got an envious comment from the temp yesterday! I’m having lettuce tacos this week, which consist of little gem lettuce leaves topped with cold roast beef, sundried tomatoes, and a good dollop of sour cream. It needs a plate for the full visual effect, but is very tasty and low-carb)
  • fix meeting room before meetings start
  • welcome E back from her hols
  • sort out sub co stuff for Needy & Greedy
  • if time, get head round the Gift Aid / inter-co situation with the property sub co
  • go to law firm employment law update with Z
  • food shopping
  • dinner with G

Moosie Wednesday 27 November

Well last night did not exactly go to plan! My brother sprang on me the question of what I thought about Christianity (I was not prepared for that!) and I actually told him the truth (he was definitely NOT prepared for that!) along with the truth about a whole host of other things that we both told the truth about. The truth is powerful stuff but I feel better for having gotten stuff off my chest, but it was clear that my views were a disappointment. I made it clear that I was interested in getting to know him better and us hanging out more, he said he wants to go away and think about that and will let me know in January!!! I think he thinks the lack of religious common ground will make it hard for us to agree on anything and it might be more contentious than it’s worth? I dunno. I put it out there anyway so I suppose he can take it or leave it and we can always go back to how we were before.

Will be glad of work to throw myself into and friends to talk to today!

Ftf:
* sleep in, quick routines
* swim

Work:
* payments
* budget seems to be going more smoothly than expected – we may finish it today and it’s not due until Friday!!
* revision – remember that everything is progress and everything I learn helps. I have a bunch of tricky stuff to try and conquer today and will feel better if I can get my head around that!
* must get on top of project x stuff and the accompanying policy
* lunch?
* work to 6.30 and get the cheap train home
* start drafting jp letter on the train

Tonight: b Is on the night shift again so I’m not really planning anything – if I work late I can just have some food and go to sleep although there are a few things that need doing:
* laundry
* wrap presents so far
* other stuff off master list – Christmas cards, birthday cards
* maybe do a bit of music
* maybe have a bath?!!!

Work was a bit maddening yesterday.  This grant budget is so tricky to work out.  40% has to go to one piece, no more than 30% can go to another, 30% has to go elsewhere, etc., etc.  It’s surprisingly difficult to get everything allocated just so in order to meet all of the criteria.  My boss decided to move back the submission date by a week, so that takes some of the pressure off.  Still, I’d like to be done with my part before leaving for the Thanksgiving holiday, because I know that I’ll soon be getting some more budgets to analyze and negotiate.  And all the while, I’d really rather just be hiking in the mountains!!!
