The snow has stopped and the boss is back today.  I still find myself in the mid-winter doldrums.  Perhaps it is because I am working on the annual budget, which looks just dismal.  I must keep reminding myself that all I need do is figure out the numbers.  It is my boss’s responsibility to figure our where we go from here.

I’m listening to a fairly good audio book, The Power of Habit.  I find it a bit tedious in places, because I just want the author to get to the point already, but when he does get to the point, it is interesting.

I’ve been eating the sparse diet of protein, rice and vegetables for over a week now.   For some reason, today I am finding it ridiculously boring.  I must remember that I’m only committing to it for one week at a time.

Oh, I forgot to mention for SL’s benefit that I did my new kettlebell workout yesterday morning.  It was fantastic!  Surprisingly, the main benefits that I can feel were cardio and glutes, but I’m sure there was other good stuff going on, too.

Project Runway!

calypte 31st Jan

SL’s right: I need to make more of an effort to stay part of this little community 🙂

End of January, eh? On the plus side, tomorrow starts a new month of my Happiness Project – a rather watered down version of Gretchen Rubin’s book, but designed to help me remember the fun things in life and get out of the rut built by long years of studying and putting everything off ’til ‘later’.

January’s ‘big three’ were meditation, movement and writing. I don’t want to drop any of those, although I admit that my enthusiasm tailed off mid-month, got a fresh burst of enthusiasm then tailed off although a bit less. I’m kind of okay at the moment with managing two out of the three on any given day! Bizarrely the ‘easiest’ to stick to – meditation – has probably taken the biggest hit. Should try and rectify that. Movement has been okay-ish: still not back at the gym (and maybe not the worst place to avoid in January) although I’m hoping soon, given that my generally fitness is increasingly slightly with using the zumba game at home – although that ‘short’ class did just about kill me off 😉

Slightly disappointed that the writing one hasn’t been on fiction BUT am super-happy to have refound morning pages – and that they’re working! I also finished reading ‘The Right to Write’ by the same author (Julia Cameron, Artist’s Way) and it was just brilliant – well recommended! So morning pages are good, writing is become part of my daily life, and it can all grow from there 🙂

For February, I’m thinking the first thing to add is more sleep! Earlier nights are going to be necessary – soon I hope! – if I’m going to get back into a working routine, and I do get fed up of being grumpy-tired for the sake of having dawdled too much the night before, or not been able to get to sleep ‘cos I’d had a lie in.

Ah yes – new changes?! Well, yesterday I applied for a great-sounding job (I could tick off ALL of the advert point!) with a great-sounding company, plus sent my CV to a recruitment agency for another post with a company I have past links to – was unsure about approach the new head of department directly, although I used to work with her – I probably should, right? I find these things a minefield!

So, wish me luck! 🙂

(PS – happy belated birthday, Miss E! All those hints in advance and I still missed it!! D’oh!)

SL’s FTF, Thurs 31st Jan

Am missing the sense of community that we used to have on here 😦

I know everyone is busy or away for various reasons or have their own blogs now, but have been feeling sad to see me and Wren as the only people regularly posting here. I’ve been wondering about going back to TOP but that ain’t what it used to be either as we all know. Sorry to moan, am not trying to make anyone feel bad, just figure out in my head what to do when this place is so quiet these days and although there’s the odd nice flurry like there was last week, it doesn’t seem to last. Oh well.

Last day of Jan already! I’m working 9-5 today and waking up at 7.25 wasn’t as bad as it would have been last week – it’s definitely getting lighter out there. Am in the unusual position of being ahead of schedule at the moment, so will have to make the most of it.

This evening’s mission is to replenish coffee supplies and go to Selfridges Food Hall to get salmon for dinner.

  • coffee
  • prep lunch – cold sausages and salad
  • finish off acs schedules when info arrives
  • check club acs
  • VAT return with E
  • checking/filing
  • leave at 5.00
  • coffee shop and Selfridges
  • dinner with G

I saw the foot doctor again yesterday.  He did a lot of poking and prodding, and he says he believes that my foot has healed well from the surgery.  Well but then, why am I experiencing so much pain?  After more poking and prodding, he hauled out the x-rays and pointed to what he says is a lot of osteoarthritis on my ankle and some other footbones.  It’s true, the pain that I have is different than the plantar fasciitis pain, as it has been worse since the weather has been stormy.  I guess I’m open to the possibility that he is right, although it will take some getting used to.  I’m applying some topical pain reliever four times a day and doing a bunch of stretches, and it should be clear in a few days to weeks if the diagnosis and the treatment are correct.

Today is another bossless day.  Hurrah!  It’s also still snowing, and the budget is still looming.  My primary aim is to at least finish the personnel section of the budget, which is the biggest part.  And then, I plan to leave early to maximize the likelihood of a safe commute home.

Top Chef!

SL’s FTF, Wed 30th Jan

Forgot to wish Miss E a happy birthday yesterday – happy birthday! Hope you had a great day.

Nothing very exciting happening today, but am going to wear my new suit for the first time, as Peter and I have a meeting with some high up cheeses to argue about some charges so the corporate don’t-mess-with-me look could come in handy. G approved of the suit when I tried it on to show him yesterday, so that was good!

  • ironing
  • coffee
  • re-read accounts and check everything
  • check things for ace colleague Z
  • check club accounts
  • mindfulness – we keep forgetting to do it, am determined that we should do it today as everyone has been missing it
  • meeting with said cheeses
  • leave at 6.00
  • clear up carnage from last night
  • Borgen!

I belive the winter doldrums have officially set in.  I never seem to get enough sleep and am not feeling a lot of enthusiasm for anything that involves going out of the house.  It is snowing like a mofo in the mountains, making the morning commute fairly slow and unpleasant.  This is good time to keep an eye on the prize…that April/May trip to Paris & London!

On a more positive note, the next two days will be bossless, and Mr. Wren has taken on the task of getting the refrigerator repaired, so I don’t have to be bothered with it at all.  Bless him!

SL’s FTF, Tues 29th Jan

Three of us went to the do at UCL last night, which was just as expected. C and I got a big hug from fave fundholder, which was the highlight of the evening, and then later B turned up too. I was glad the others joined me as it was nice to show our support even though we didn’t stay that long.

Have now given up listening to Gaydio in the morning which was too shit even for me, and that’s saying something as am barely conscious in my pre-coffee state. So let’s have some lovely Taylor Swift instead.  “Before you I only dated self-indulgent takerrrs” does make me giggle 🙂

Feeling reasonably on top of things at the moment and getting lots of sleep which is lovely. More plugging away at accounts today.

  • kettlebell x 20
  • ironing
  • prep delicious and healthy packed lunch – chicken and avocado salad with red pepper and fennel, coconut
  • coffee
  • get IT guy over as we need to extend Sage to yet another computer
  • discuss accounts schedules with chief
  • discuss property schedule with Peter
  • make any tweaks required, especially to cashflow projection
  • update grants schedule
  • call auditor woman about Sage
  • maybe even call Sage about Sage?
  • long list of other stuff to do should the opportunity arise
  • leave at 6.00
  • ‘Trose
  • some clearing up, ironing etc.
  • dinner with G – sausages and red kale
